The Mbira Academy ideology is built upon the values of connection, learning and change. 'Mhararano', which means 'the cross roads' in Shona, is an educational movement responding to and connecting with nature and the individual needs of people.

Aims & Objectives

The Mbira Academy aims to bring people together and provide a learning environment where they can share philosophical beliefs and experience ritual, through the languages of music, literature, poetry, story telling, visual arts, dance, drama and film. The Mhararano objective is to offer membership of the Academy and to fund and invite artists, artisans and performers to share and combine their skills and to connect diverse roots music from around the world.

Chartwell Dutiro

Chartwell grew up in rural Zimbabwe and started playing the mbira when he was four. The mbira is an ancient instrument, consisting of at least 22 metal keys mounted on a wooden soundboard. Chartwell and his brother would often play mbira all night, calling the ancestral spirits for guidance, as has been done in Zimbabwe over centuries.
