02.02.12 Launching The Mbira Academy
Friday 27th January 2012 saw the official launch of Mhararano, the UK’s first ever Mbira Academy at Dartington Space (part of the Dartington Hall Trust). This new, exciting establishment was launched with an all day celebration of events including schools and community singing and percussion workshops in the morning, public mbira workshops in the afternoon, a range of delicious and authentic Zimbabwean food and some memorable speeches, especially during the official opening ceremony by David Francis, Director of Dartington Space.
The launch day was ended with a spectacular night of Roots Music in front of a sold out audience featuring an exciting line-up of musicians including the Academy Director and Master Mbira player, Chartwell Dutiro, alongside a host of fantastic international artists.
The launch of Mhararano was a really special day for all involved. It was a suitable celebration of the mbira instrument and an exciting taster of things to come from this exciting musical academy.
